Set up your AI app
Add Recordful to Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Codex, opencode, VS Code, Windsurf or Gemini CLI.
You need Chrome, Recordful and Node.js 20.10 or newer. The Claude Desktop bundle includes everything, so it doesn't need Node.
The quick way: one command
npx -y recordful-mcp install --target claude--target is one of claude, cursor, codex, opencode, vscode, windsurf or gemini. Without --yes it only shows what it would change; add --yes to apply:
npx -y recordful-mcp install --target cursor --yesIt adds the server to that app's own configuration (and the record-demo skill for Claude Code, Cursor and Codex), keeps your other servers and settings, and leaves a file it can't read untouched, telling you the entry to add yourself. Restart the app afterwards so it loads Recordful.
Or paste one prompt into your AI app and let it run these steps for itself.
By hand
| App | Where | What to add |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | terminal | claude mcp add --scope user recordful -- npx -y recordful-mcp (native Windows: ... -- cmd /c npx -y recordful-mcp). Or the plugin: /plugin marketplace add iKislay/recordful-mcp, then /plugin install recordful@recordful |
| Claude Desktop | Settings → Extensions | Install recordful.mcpb from the latest release, or add the entry below to claude_desktop_config.json |
| Cursor | ~/.cursor/mcp.json | the entry below |
| Windsurf | ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json | the entry below |
| Gemini CLI | ~/.gemini/settings.json | the entry below |
| VS Code | MCP: Add Server, or .vscode/mcp.json | { "servers": { "recordful": { "type": "stdio", "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "recordful-mcp"] } } } |
| opencode | opencode.json | { "mcp": { "recordful": { "type": "local", "command": ["npx", "-y", "recordful-mcp"], "enabled": true } } } |
| Codex | ~/.codex/config.toml | [mcp_servers.recordful], command = "npx", args = ["-y", "recordful-mcp"] |
The entry for most apps:
{ "mcpServers": { "recordful": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "recordful-mcp"] } } }npx -y recordful-mcp setup prints all of these.
Turn it on in Recordful (once)
- Open Recordful's popup, then More → AI agents, and turn on Let AI apps control Recordful.
- Chrome asks to allow screen recording. Click Allow. Recordful needs this the first time it records, and Chrome only asks on a click.
First recording
- Ask your AI to record something, for example "Record a demo of signing up on localhost:3000".
- When it asks, click the Recordful icon on the tab to record.
- The first time, Recordful opens a window naming your AI app and showing a 4-digit code. If it matches the one your AI shows, click Allow.
After that you only click the icon on the tab you want recorded.
